On the Pedagogical Potential of »Media Magica« for Early Childhood Education

Werner Nekes dealt with his collection in various ways: research-based, artistically, also didactically. His six-part film series Media Magica (FRG 1986-1996) bears witness to this. Herein he talks about the collected devices, books and optical toys, weaves connections between them, creates an astonishing history of seeing and the desire to look. Above all, however, Media Magica provides a sensory approach. One that could also play an important role for future mediation formats.

This article deals with the question of how access to the collection could be created for an early childhood age group. For children, experiencing the world and sensory interaction with the world play an important role. There are overlaps here with Media Magica's mediation strategies and positions from experimental media archaeology. Taking practical examples into account, these traces will be explored and possible approaches for children will be outlined and reflected on. (Translation TWS)
