»Die Geschichte der Bilder in den Blick nehmen«

Celebrating Werner Nekes' 80th Birthday

graphic slider element

Werner Nekes was born on April 29, 1944. As a filmmaker and collector, he spent his entire life pursuing the question: »What did really happen between the images?« In his search for answers, he not only created a multi-layered and extensive cinematic œuvre, but also assembled a unique collection of over 25,000 objects that reflect the history of seeing since early modern times.

With his films and exhibitions, Werner Nekes has explored the forgotten terra incognita of a history of seeing and brought it back into our consciousness. The conference Die Geschichte der Bilder in den Blick nehmen celebrates Werner Nekes' 80th birthday by exploring these perspectives and furthermore addresses future questions and approaches within a discussion of international scholars. The conference will be held in German and English.

The conference is made possible by the generous support of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.
